is possible indeed that St. Paul the Pharisee found Pharisaic Judaism everywhere, as he conceived it under that aspect, and that this author, the Hellenist, contemplated Judaism under another aspect, a Judaism with an allegorical tendency, which resolved the “customs” into ideas and principles, and was not bound fast to external practice. But while there may be truth in this, it is plain that the author assumes that his readers will go along with him in most of his opinions, and that the type of
